Versions
Projects naturally create many exports:v2, v3, final, mix, master, a WAV and MP3 of the same render, or several numbered takes. Motif reduces that clutter by grouping related files into one track with a version stack.
What stays unchanged
- every export remains a normal file in its original folder;
- Motif does not rename, overwrite, or merge files;
- opening a version always plays the corresponding source audio.
How versions are recognized
Motif understands explicit markers such asv2, v.3, and (2); trailing numbers; and take words such as final, master, mix, bounce, wip, draft, and rough.
If the same render exists in several formats, Motif treats those formats as one version and selects the higher-quality source for playback where possible. It does not present a WAV and its matching MP3 as two creative revisions.
Open the version stack
Click the version badge in a Library row. Each entry shows its version label and date with a play button.- Starting a version from a different track begins normal playback.
- Switching versions of the current track preserves the listening context so comparison is immediate.
Compare from the now playing bar
When the active track has several versions, the bottom player adds:- version label — move through older versions;
- hide version — hide which version is playing for a blind A/B decision; select it again to show the version;
- random version — let Motif choose one version.
Queue behavior
Versions remain one item in the surrounding queue. Previous, next, shuffle, repeat, and automatic advance therefore move between tracks rather than treating every export as a separate queue item.When grouping is unexpected
Version grouping depends on recognizable naming relationships. Give unrelated ideas distinct base names. For related exports, keep a consistent base title and conventional suffix such asv2 or mix 3.
Motif does not currently offer a manual command to merge arbitrary files into a version stack. Clear source naming is the most reliable input.
